MUSCAT: The National Public Health Laboratory has achieved a 100 per cent score in a proficiency test for poliovirus isolation under the World Health Organization’s global programme, the Ministry of Health said.

The laboratory has more than 40 years of experience in detecting and diagnosing poliovirus. It employs advanced diagnostic techniques, including virus isolation, molecular testing, genome sequencing and environmental surveillance.

In 2025, an advanced environmental surveillance laboratory was opened in Muscat to strengthen the early detection of the virus.

Serving as a regional reference centre, the laboratory also provides diagnostic services and supports surveillance and response programmes in Oman and several countries across the region.

The achievement reflects continued efforts to protect Oman and support global initiatives to eradicate polio.
